Chapter 14
Fiâs attempts to make an early exit with Dylan were thwarted. She was just one of many parents trying to persuade their teenagers to leave the theatre. They were met with âIn a minute, Mumâ, âIâve got to say goodbye to Chloeâ, or âYou donât understand. This is itâ. Hugs were exchanged, and fond farewells.
âWonât they be seeing each other at school tomorrow?â Jade asked.
Fi rolled her eyes. âIf Iâve learned anything, itâs that you canât hurry a teenager.â
Eventually, Inspector Falconer came into the foyer and ordered everyone off the premises. With much sulking, they complied.
âItâs so mean,â said Dylan, as they walked down the street. âNothing would happen to us, anyway.â
âBecause youâre invincible, I suppose,â said Fi.
I remember when I believed that, thought Jade. How wrong I was.
âNight, Jade,â said Dylan, as they approached Crystal Dreams.
âJadeâs coming back to ours for a quick cuppa,â said Fi. âYou can game for a bit if you want.â
âOn a school night? Whatâs got into you, Mum?â
âWeâre talking strategy,â said Fi. âWe may not be able to run our stalls in the theatre any more, so we need to talk tactics.â
âOh, business,â said Dylan, and loped moodily along.
Back at Coralie, Fi made tea and waited while Dylan collected a large glass of milk and an assortment of snacks before retiring to the gaming end of the boat. âTheatre workâs really physical,â he said, carrying a tray with his glass, a bowl of cereal, a peanut butter and jam sandwich and a packet of crisps. He pulled the curtain across, and thirty seconds later doom-laden music began playing.
âLetâs sit at the kitchen table,â said Fi. âNot that Dylan will care what weâre talking about, but Iâd rather he didnât hear anything if he comes back for more food.â
They made themselves comfortable and Fi placed a packet of chocolate digestives between them. âGood job I had thinking biscuits in. Now, where do we start?â
Jade studied her. âYou seem to have perked up a bit.â
Fi looked surprised, then considered. âYes, I have. Iâve been trying to work things out on my own and getting nowhere. Two heads are better than one, and all that.â
âTrue.â Jade wondered how to say what she had in her mind, and decided to go for it. âDo you mind if Iâm frank with you?â
Fi smiled. âThat depends on what youâre about to say.â
âWellâ¦â Jade took a biscuit, just in case. âFrom what youâve told me and what the inspector said in the theatre, everything points to Andy. So why donât you think itâs him?â
Fi took a biscuit and sipped her tea. Jade waited. âThe inspector probably thinks Iâm blinded by love,â she said. âOr lust. But it isnât that. On the face of it, yes, itâs plausible. An ambitious actor keen to make his mark is overshadowed by the arrival of a famous co-star he doesnât respect. What would be more natural than trying to get rid of her?â
Jade grinned. âIâm not sure your counterargument is doing quite what you want it to.
